In Grace Street: A Sister's Memoir of Grief and Gratitude, author Maureen Callahan Smith grants us a window into the way life can suddenly revolve around a hospital room, an IV pole and a face on the pillow. Avoiding the twin perils of sentimentality and pain porn, Smith gives us in equal measure the harrowing detail, the mounting incremental losses, and the stripped-down intimacy, the humor, the light and life in dying.
